The ZiggyCam will be live for the month long trip. With the exception of when anchored after dark (i.e. saving battery usage rather than broadcast a cam feed of the dark) or during a rare lack of cellphone signal the cam will be live 24/7 along with the chat room even miles offshore. The soft goal this year is to hit Mackinac Island and round Drummand Island at the top of Lake Huron before heading back home to Detroit.
We rolled out of Harrisville at about 10 am and headed north under a light wind making good time. Soon the wind picked up and we were making great time.
The first waypoint was an exposed wreck about 30 miles out to the NE in Thunder Bay. We blew into there at a steady 7.5 knts and better. All was good. I was worried we would lose our speed when we swung to the NW and put the winds on out tail.
With the addition of a whisker pole on the genoa we flew the sails "wing to wing" and held our speed for the remaining 20 miles of sailing back towards the coastline.
After a couple of hours Presque Isle came over the horizon right on time. The waves were whipped up into 6ft rollers and we were surfing down them hitting 8 and 9 knots of speed.
Pointed into a great sunset for the live webcam we screamed up to the harbor entrance. The furling line jammed up not letting the front sail roll up. In the ugly choppy 6 foot waves, my climbing out on the nose and unjamming the line was a difficult chore.
With our sails down we ligned up the Range light like a rifle sight and picked our way in through the rocks guarding the harbor from under the water.
We docked fighting the high winds and called it a night...
