Week 4 was my layover week. I planned to stay and hang with my friends in East Tawas and regroup. Jan & Tony came up for a weekend and we had a blast as usual. Doug and his family and friends came up for the week and stayed at the campgrounds on the point and we hooked up several times and always staggered away happy. If you've never been to E. Tawas by boat you need to go. The town is right there handy with a small grocery/butcher shop, bars, tourist shops o plenty and a small town movie house. The state owned marina has leveled the old nasty shower and bathroom building (I've seen outhouses cleaner and smell better) and put in a state of the art set of facilities. The layout of the marina makes the walk to dump your trash laterally over half mile away by foot round trip though. The water in the marina is clean and clear. The wells are 15 foot deep and the bottom is clear as day to view from the dock. This is also the only docks I can think of on Lake Huron that allows swimming off the docks. I love floating around the boat with a beer on the hot days. The town is a tourist trap that still holds on to its small town roots...barely. Everyone is friendly and helpful. The white Tail restaurant is the best breakfast in town. Family run and damn good. Mr. G's Italian restaurant has kick ass pizza and the usual pizzeria fare and delivers right to the boat, nice service on a drunk afternoon floating around the docks. Holiday Inn has a Tiki bar right on the beach and a good little bar inside that has a local blues band playing allot. Barnacle Bill's is the best bar in town. Good burgers and all things deep fried. The new pizza oven come in handy too. Mat and Chris (although the coconut telegraph tells me he has left now) and all the girls will hook you up. Tell them I sent you. Chum's is a good place for ribs. I've always found the service there unacceptable but gave then another chance at the request of some locals. It was a great meal and we were treated like kings. Klenows Market across the street has a meat counter to die for. All done right there. The sausage is heavenly. I had a couple of new York strips that I watched him cut off the cow that was awesome. They also specialize in jerky. My favorite is the turkey jerky but there is over a dozen types and they are all worth the $14 a pound. They have a small but complete grocery selection and a good liquor shelf also. I always stock up on meat and veggies before I sail out. Murphy's Irish Pub is a good friendly place to hide out and relax while walking around also. Along with an Ace hardware, a dime store, a dollar store, two banks, a couple of ice cream joints and an auto parts store it has most anything a boater could want for a getaway hideout. The buttloads of tourist shirt and souvenir shops are a good reason to walk around and keeps the women folk's shopping gene happy.
